Someone said that directory will die in 2009, whether you believe it or not, to building backlink, I think blog will be more and more important than directory .
What do you think about?

I have one social bookmarking site and one blog. So i'm not going to choose from that. If you can afford then get both. You'll have benefit for long term from that. Both of them serve different domains and are capable of making money if you work hard/smart on them.

As Ryuk said anything is successful if you put on some effort to get good results.

I personally feel blogs are more important for link building than direcotries.
