with the number of sites launched today and the competition, i think apart from all the on site SEO it is absolutely necessary to have some quality backlinks pointing to a domain to rank well in google, of course this depends on the niche, has anyone had success with good serps in competitive niches with barely any backlinks
?

Quality linking matters. Don't buy links instead be worthy enough to be linked by others.That work for longer run.Other than that there are some sites which does offer free backlink with do-follow.Use those services,blogs,forums.

Backlinks are a plus to have, never buy them. I earned PR1 without having any backlink from Google. Post some links in forums and blogs. This will be useful.

More significantly if the sites that have back links to your site have a high google page rank then google will give more value to your site and as an outcome your page rank shall improve.

It would just be difficult to get a good rank without backlinks. Few links from high PR sites will contribute more towards serp than many links from low PR sites.

Hi, I completely agree with you friend. In these days the competition is ion his way, so get rank in google SEO is essential. Here I want to reveal one point on backlinks. The expert say SEO is a slow, but effective way to get rank. Though it will take some time to bring out the proper result, but its effect lasting for long days. Interesting thing is in these days nobody wants the slow procedure. The site owners (how new he/she is, not a factor) want rank in superfast way. totally agree that backlink is a must ,but having other to link to your site is another good way so having a good contet making other to link to your post can help building backlink too ,most common backlink is from bookmarking,directory,social networking
